Harvey Shapiro
These two cellists influenced my life greatly. I studied cello with Ray Davis, principal cellist of the Seattle Symphony while I was in high school for three years. He convinced my parents to allow me to go to New York where I studied with these two great cellists. I won a full scholarship while in my 4th and 5th years at Juilliard and also joined the New Jersey Symphony during my 5th year. I played in the New Jersey Symphony for three years and then moved to Switzerland where I was Principal cello in the Beil Orchestra for 3 years. While at Juilliard I spent 2 summers studying cello at Juennes Musicales in Germany and Belgium where I played in Orchestras, played chamber music concerts with Quartets and Quintets and gave cello recitals with my accompanist Seta Karakashian a terrific pianist who accompanied most of Leonard Rose's and Harvey Shaipro's students. I owe so much to Harvey Shapiro for helping me to advance so quickly as he did with so many other students.
Since returning to Seattle I have enjoyed playing full recitals here with Peter Stevens and Lisa Maria d'Aquila. I studied with Eric Wilson who is a cello teacher at the University of British Columbia and in July of 2009 I went back to New York to study with James Kreger who was Harvey Shapiro's assistant for 25 years. I recently purchased a Jan Kulik cello from Carrabba Violins so that I finally have a truly great cello to play recitals .
